Naturopath advice to prepare your skin for the sun from Aurélie Canzoneri

With the approach of summer, naturopath Aurélie Canzoneri gives us some advice to naturally prepare our skin for the sun! Beware, these tips do not protect you from the effects of the sun: so remember to expose yourself reasonably and avoid the hottest hours ;-)

Stay hydrated The sun dehydrates the skin, so always remember to drink water daily and regularly throughout the day. I recommend drinking 1.5 liters of spring water daily.

Scrubbing Scrubbing: remember to scrub regularly to remove dead skin cells and get a more beautiful, even tan! For a "homemade" scrub, you can mix honey and/or vegetable oil with sugar. Our Oh My Cream Skincare Nourishing Scrub is also perfect for gently exfoliating and moisturizing the skin!

Moisturize your skin Moisturizing : it is important to give your skin (face and body) a good dose of hydration because the sun tends to dry out the skin.

Eat foods rich in beta-carotene Beta-carotene: Beta-carotene is found mainly in orange fruits and vegetables such as carrots and apricots for example. They will promote the production of melanin and therefore allow you to tan more quickly! They are also known to give a healthy glow to the skin. This carrot cake recipe is perfect to include carrots, rich in beta-carotene, in your diet.

Supplement with urucum: this superfood is 100 times richer in carotenoids (including beta-carotene) than carrots! It prepares the skin for tanning, prolongs it and reactivates it by stimulating the production of melanin. Urucum can be taken as a treatment before, during and after exposure!

Eat enough protein: don't skip out on protein, it should be consumed daily because the body does not store it. Collagen and elastin are important proteins for all skin problems, especially when damaged by UV rays. These so-called structural proteins are more easily renewed if we eat sufficient protein. This broth recipe is particularly rich in collagen.

Eat foods rich in antioxidants Antioxidants: they help fight against the effects of free radicals that are responsible for skin aging. As the sun accelerates this process, antioxidants are essential in summer to help keep skin beautiful and young despite the possible harmful effects of the sun's rays and to fight against the degradation of collagen. Antioxidants are notably present in zinc, selenium, urucum, vitamin C, vitamin E...

Consume foods rich in vitamin E A good intake of vitamin E neutralizes the excess of free radicals and fights against oxidative stress and premature cell aging, thanks to its antioxidant power. This liposoluble vitamin enters the constitution of cell membranes and confers elasticity and plasticity to the skin. It contributes to maintain the skin in good health despite exposure to the sun. Consuming 1 tablespoon of wheat germ oil provides the body with a good supply of vitamin E.

Eat foods rich in vitamin C: this vitamin helps to recreate collagen and helps healing, so it is essential during exposure to the sun.

Eat enough omega 3: they will help the skin to resist the aggressions of UV rays and to regenerate itself. Fatty fish such as sardines, herring, mackerel and vegetable oils such as flax, hemp or camelina are good sources of omega 3. You can also supplement your diet with omega 3 through food supplements.

In summary, favour:

  • Green and orange vegetables (rich in beta-carotene)
  • Raw food in the form of juice or raw vegetables
  • Sprouted seeds
  • Fresh seasonal fruits (preferably whole and not in the form of juice because they are richer in sugars)
  • Good fats: avocados, oilseeds, good quality cold-pressed oils (rich in omega-3)
  • Good quality proteins
  • Good hydration: sufficient spring water
  • Antioxidants
  • Natural anti-inflammatories: turmeric, ginger, flaxseed oil, hemp, camelina (omega 3)
