The skin mistakes we all make

Excessive exfoliation, putting the phone on the cheek, perfume or insufficient sleep are all bad daily habits that damage the skin. Three experts told Bénédicte Burguet what they should not do.

  • Forgetting to wash your hands before your skincare routine and skipping the nail brush to chase away the bacteria hidden underneath. Applying your cleanser with not perfectly clean hands is a nonsense.
  1.   Exfoliating too hard or too often... A problem I see often in the U.S., with the result that skin barriers are compromised by the frequent use of acid-based products. The right solution: opt for resurfacing masks with less aggressive enzymes, but just as effective.
  1. Stick your phone to your ear and cheek (the bacteria from the phone stick to the skin): use a hands-free kit.
  2. Massage the face without oil (it breaks the capillaries): always put a greasy substance on the skin to massage with fingers or with a massage tool.
  3. Always sleep on the same side (a habit that favors the creation of wrinkles on the same part of the face). Try to alternate sides or, ideally, sleep on your back to avoid wrinkling the skin on your face.

Dr Jean Pierre Naccache, Aesthetic surgeon and micronutritionist

« Every skin is different and requires a different dermatological approach. Dry skin doesn’t need the same attention as oily skin! We often make the same rules when it comes to premature aging (taking particular care of fragile areas of the face, hydration, avoiding the sun) but in reality there are only four rules that are common to all. »

  1. A deleterious lifestyle: junk food is a harmful gesture. Sodas, alcohol and saturated fats (cold cuts, fast food), tobacco (a cigarette is a chemical factory), stress... All this accelerates skin aging through known mechanisms that accumulate. Among them, oxidative stress, low-grade inflammation and the phenomenon of glycation (caramelization of collagen fibers).
  1. Insufficient sleep: the skin needs about seven hours of sleep to regenerate. Generally speaking, it is at night that the cell regeneration mechanism takes place. The skin - the largest organ (15% of the total weight) - is no exception to this rule. It is therefore during the night that the cells (fibroblasts) are activated to synthesize collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. This is the principle of chronobiology.
  1. Not removing makeup is also a very bad habit that becomes harmful in the long run, because it accentuates skin aging. Indeed, during the day, the skin is under the assault of multiple aggressions (dust from pollution, free radicals from tobacco smoke, toxicity of exhaust fumes, chemical pollutants ... Not to mention the makeup that, by blocking the pores, prevents the skin from breathing properly).
  2. Triturate pimples. This irrepressible act can be very costly to our skin. It is the best way to aggravate lesions (acne scars) and, sometimes, to worsen the skin condition by spreading a local staphylococcal infection, or even a loco-regional infection.
