In the bathroom of Fabienne Sebaoun, founder of Mimétique

A scientist at heart and lifelong skin enthusiast, Fabienne Sebaoun founded Mimétique with a clear ambition: to understand what skin really needs, far from fleeting trends and "must-have" products. Meet this successful entrepreneur for whom every innovation responds to a real need, and every skincare gesture becomes a moment of understanding and self-care.

Tell us all about yourself

“My name is Fabienne Sebaoun, cosmetic chemist and founder of Mimétique. My mother is Italian—she arrived from Italy without speaking a word of French—and on my father's side, I come from a family of dermatologists. I started working for major cosmetics companies and lived in Canada for several years, during which time I became obsessed with one question: why do we put so many things on our skin without really understanding how it works? During Covid, instead of baking sourdough bread, I went back to university to study biomimicry applied to the skin. When I'm passionate about a subject, I can't help but get to the bottom of it. Mimétique born out of all that."

How have your origins influenced your relationship with beauty?

“I've never sunbathed in my life. Well, let's just say I was never allowed to. All my friends would slather themselves with whatever they wanted and sunbathe peacefully while my aunt Joëlle lectured me about UV rays. I desperately wanted to bake in the sun like everyone else. I was so pale... But I listened to her. It wasn't until much later that I realized she was right. She had me test all the products that the labs sent her, I followed her to dermatology conferences, I read all the scientific literature. I still read it. She taught me this: science first, promises second."

How do you take care of your skin today?

“I moisturize and protect my skin a lot. That's my foundation. And I admit, I try out a lot of formulas and raw ingredients. My bathroom is an extension of my lab. I'm this close to replacing bathrobes with white coats. My husband is still a little resistant, but I'll get there eventually.

In the evening: I clean up at Skin Cloud, exfoliate two to three times a week, and am currently testing anti-dark spot products, most recently thiamidol. I finish with Restore+, our richest cream (released in January 2026), for dry, mature, and sensitive skin. Mine ticks all the boxes.

In the morning: Skin Revive because its antioxidant and radiance-boosting properties are quite incredible. It has a very light texture, so I add one or two creams depending on the season. I have very dry skin, so I don't mess around with oiliness. Our eye contour CTRL EYE, which I also apply around my mouth. Then SPF. Non-negotiable. I also love the Oh My Cream selection: the EGF Serum by Bioeffect, the Oh My CreamOh My Cream Skincare, which I love to mix with Skin Restore Cream for an even more natural effect, the Bisou Balm Violette_FR in the shade Mon Chéri... and so much more.

I also do LED at my dermatologist's office. And I don't use retinol. You can get similar effects with other active ingredients without making your skin photosensitive. But everyone is free to choose."

Did you always know you would create a biotech brand?

“I dreamed about it, yes. But did I know it would happen? No. I make creams. I just try to make them well, using what science has taught us about the skin. Sometimes I still can't believe it's happening, that people are buying our products, that we're at Oh My Cream in France and the UK, and even at Mecca in Australia. There are days when I think to myself, 'Wait, is this really happening?'"

What was the trigger?

After years working for major brands, I needed to understand skin and how to formulate products for it. When COVID hit, I went back to university to study chemistry with this goal in mind. We all have our neuroses. I wanted to crack the code of skin, understand how it really works so I could create biotech formulas highly concentrated in active ingredients that really work. I love learning and getting to the bottom of things, especially when I'm passionate about them. I'm almost obsessive. Going back to school at my age, with students in their twenties and younger (ouch!), was quite something. But I don't regret it for a second."

How would you define Mimétique s DNA Mimétique

Mimétique is biomimicry applied to the skin. We imitate it to make it work to its full potential. Then we rely on biotech, clinical data, and total transparency about what we put in the tubes. Science first, then education. Each product is ultra-concentrated and multifunctional. We reduce the steps and increase the results. No packaging that costs more than the formula, no star ingredients just because they're trendy. If an active ingredient doesn't serve a purpose, it's not in there. And then there's our community of Skinnerds. We communicate with them a lot, we listen to them, we evolve together. Mimétique be the same brand without that."

Tell us more about the mimicry skin. What fascinates you about this concept?

What fascinated me was the obviousness of it. The answer was right there, staring us in the face, in the very structure of the skin. That's what skin mimicry is all about: choosing ingredients that your skin already has, that it recognizes and absorbs. These ingredients boost its key biological mechanisms. The goal is to mimic the skin so that it can function to its full potential. Why impose things on it that it doesn't recognize when we can give it exactly what it needs? Once I understood that, I couldn't think about anything else. I was reading studies at 2 a.m. Even the Netflix series (in 2020), Tiger King and its mullet-wearing big cat breeder, didn't stand a chance.

Has your vision of beauty changed since you started Mimétique

“Honestly, she hasn't changed. She's just become more confident. I believe in beauty based on science. I continue to look at all the innovations, I still read studies at all hours of the day and night, I always want to offer our customers the very best. What has changed is that the more Mimétique , the more I have the means to go further. We invest in research with the Chair of Cosmetology. When I started, I never imagined that would be possible.”

What do you look for most in the skincare products you use?

“Effectiveness, tolerance, and innovation. In that order. A product that works, doesn't irritate my skin, and teaches me something. If I'm testing an ingredient and there's no clinical data behind it, I'm not interested. I want to understand why it works, not just see that it works. It's a professional bias.”

What if you could only keep one Mimétiqueskincare product?

“Skin Restore+, our latest launch. It's the richest cream we've ever formulated, designed exclusively for dry, mature, and sensitive skin. But honestly, just one? That's a tough question. Because if you had asked me for two products, I would have added CTRL EYE.”

Beyond cosmetics, what are your wellness rituals?

“Sport. I discovered spinning in Canada in 2015 and it became an obsession. Then I moved on to Barre, Lagree, Pilates, and strength training. I'm completely hooked. The problem is time. Between the brand, launches, travel, family life... I would love to do more. But hey, when I can, I don't need to be asked twice. And when I can't, I eat tons of chocolate. If that counts as a wellness ritual."

What is the best beauty advice you have ever received?

“Consistency. Use good products every day and you'll see results, trust me. Skin isn't an It bag. Just because a product is hyped or all over Instagram doesn't mean it'll work for you. Your skin doesn't care about trends. It just wants to be understood.”

What's on the horizon for Mimétique

“Lots of things. My amazing team and I are working on several new launches, all requested by our community. They guide us; we don't do anything on our own. And in 2026, a new complex is coming. I wake up every morning looking forward to reading everyone's comments and feedback. I'm very lucky to be part of this adventure, and I never take anything for granted.”
