Tell us all about yourself

“I’m Gucci Westman, a makeup artist for over thirty years and the founder of Westman Atelier. I’ve spent most of my career working on editorial shoots, fashion shows, and celebrity makeup. What has always fascinated me is creating beautiful, fresh, and luminous skin—skin that looks alive. It has become one of my signature looks. I grew up in Sweden and have always been a vegetarian. That upbringing instilled values in me that are still very dear to me today: well-being, simplicity, and a love for a job well done. They continue to influence everything I do.”

At age 23, I left Sweden for Paris to train as a makeup artist. That’s where I learned to work with stick products. They’re quick to apply, easy to layer, and blend seamlessly with the rest of the makeup. Today, they’re an integral part of Westman Atelier’s identity. After Paris, I moved to Los Angeles and got my start in film makeup. Then life took me to New York. I was fortunate enough to cross paths with Grace Coddington (editor’s note: former creative director of US Vogue), to whom I owe a great deal. Thanks to her, I’ve been able to create some of Vogue’s most iconic covers and fashion spreads over the past twenty years.

Later, I became Lancôme’s International Creative Director, an incredibly rewarding experience. I learned a great deal about product development and what it truly takes to create beauty products on a large scale. I loved working with the laboratories and coming up with new formulas, but that time also made me realize that something was missing in the market. I often asked myself the same question: why is it so hard to find products that are both luxurious in their presentation and performance, while also prioritizing the quality of ingredients? I wanted to create products that truly deliver on their promises, with visible and tangible results.

“In 2018, my husband David and I launched Westman Atelier. My goal was simple: to create a routine that makes it easy to achieve beautiful skin and highlight what makes us unique, without trying to change who we are.”

What drew you to makeup?

“My mom wouldn’t let me wear makeup when I was young! So I’d secretly put it on my friends… and on myself on the bus, without her knowing. Before moving to Paris, I was an au pair with a family in Switzerland. The mother was a fashion critic. She received tons of beauty products and would give them to me. She was also the one who took me to my first fashion shows in Paris.

“Today, I’m lucky enough to be able to create the products I’ve always dreamed of, while working with incredible clients who continue to inspire me every day. What still fascinates me is just how personal beauty is. Makeup should be there to reveal your personality, not to hide it.”

Did you always know you'd start your own brand?

“Not at all. I loved being a makeup artist and really thrived in that role. But over the years, between my work with brands and laboratories, mixing products backstage, and all the custom textures I created for my clients, I began to realize that there might be room for something truly different. The real turning point came when I had an allergic reaction to a product. That made me much more mindful of ingredients and what we put on our skin. I was looking for products that were both effective and pleasant to use, but that also cared for the skin. I felt that something was missing in the market: an approach that combines luxury, effective formulas, performance, and a genuine wellness dimension."

You have become synonymous with a particularly refined and luminous vision of beauty. How would you describe Westman Atelier?

“For me, it’s all about achieving beautiful, healthy, and natural-looking skin—effortlessly. I love the idea of modern simplicity. Everything we create must be intuitive, effective, and bring a sense of joy to everyday life. We want to design products that people love to use, but above all, that they want to reach for day after day because they deliver real results. They must also have a positive impact on the skin, long after they’ve been removed. The combination of a luxurious experience, high performance, and truly effective ingredients is at the heart of the Westman Atelier philosophy.”

Where did you get that philosophy?

“I think it comes from all those years spent working with real women, in real life. For me, skin should just be skin. My approach is to highlight the face’s structure, the light, and the vitality—not to cover everything up. When makeup looks natural, people feel like themselves, only better.”

"I am deeply committed to skin health. That’s why I only create products that deliver real benefits. I work closely with our product development manager and our laboratories to find the best ingredients and delivery systems, so we can help you achieve the most beautiful skin possible."

How would you define beauty today?

“Today, beauty is much more closely linked to well-being and authenticity. People want to feel good, not just look good. My relationship with beauty has changed a lot, too. I’m more focused on routines, health, and simplicity. I have more confidence in myself and in my choices. It’s no longer a quest for perfection; it’s a search for balance.”

What can you find in your bathroom?

“Lots of devices—really, lots of them. Right now, I love tools that combine LED light and vibrations… it’s just perfect after a day of filming or traveling. I always have my Westman Atelier trio : Skin Activator, Eye Activator, Supreme C. I always come back to these three. They do it all, effortlessly.

“And then there are the gummies and dietary supplements… I take a lot of them—some from Juna to help me sleep, and others to support my metabolism. A little bit of everything, depending on the situation.”

And in your makeup bag…

“The Baby Cheeks Blush Stick in Petal, the Lit Up Highlighter Stick in Nectar, and the Face Trace Contour Stick in Coco and Biscuit are always within reach.

Right now, I can't go anywhere without my HydroBalm Tinted Lipstick. I’ve already gone through three tubes! It’s exactly what I look for in a lip balm: sheer, moisturizing, and incredibly comfortable. Its texture is soft and nourishing.

I can't do without Sun Tone Bronzing Cream. The secret to a natural tan lies in dimension. By layering two shades, you replicate the way the sun naturally hits the skin for an extremely realistic result.”

Beyond cosmetics, how do you take care of yourself?

“Sleep is probably the most underrated beauty product.”

I usually set my alarm a little earlier so I can meditate for twenty minutes. I’m also a firm believer in the benefits of exercise. I always try to fit in a Pilates or strength-training session before my morning meetings.

I also pay close attention to what I eat. I usually follow the ProLon 5-Day Fast-Mimicking Diet a few times a year. It was designed by a doctor to support organ health and metabolism.

“For me, it’s all about consistency, whether it’s exercise or diet.”

What is the most important step for making sure your makeup stays in place?

“It all starts with the condition of your skin, including the quality of your makeup.”

Skin Activator soothes redness and leaves skin supple, hydrated, and healthy. I wanted to create a product that could deeply hydrate, soothe, and firm the skin.

“I worked with Dr. Raymond Park, one of Korea’s leading skin experts, to develop the formula of my dreams. It truly takes my skin—and my makeup—to the next level.”

Can you tell us more about your formula development process?

“It usually starts with a real need—something missing from my own makeup bag or my daily life. I don’t want to create a multitude of products, just the right ones. A carefully curated collection dedicated to the complexion. Then begins a long process—sometimes even too long. We develop everything in-house: from the formulas to the packaging. We like to say that details aren’t just details—they are the design.”

I might go through more than five packaging designs and over twenty formula iterations, but it’s always worth it. When we were developing the brand, some labs told us, “You don’t need to add that much of this active ingredient. With just 1%, you can already highlight it in your marketing.” ” For us, there was never any question of making compromises, whether on costs, ingredients, or marketing. A formula that’s a dream in terms of performance is of no use if it doesn’t provide real benefits for the skin.

“We always use the highest concentrations of active ingredients to deliver real results. Keeping our promises is essential to me. We only launch a product when we believe it’s truly exceptional.”

You’ve worked in fashion shoots, film, red carpet events, and fashion shows. How have these worlds shaped your perspective?

“Each experience has taught me something different.”

Editorial photo shoots have taught me creativity and vision. Working with celebrities has taught me practical skills, because makeup has to hold up in real life and under all kinds of lighting.

“All of these experiences, combined with my own background, have shaped the balance we strive to achieve at Westman Atelier: something aspirational, yet warm and easy to wear.”

If you had to choose… What’s one item you always carry with you?

“The Face Trace Contour Stick. Many people find contouring intimidating or think it’s not for them. Yet this product is so easy to use that it’s almost impossible to go wrong. It’s all about its texture and shade. Simply apply it and blend it wherever you want to add more definition."

If you could use just one product for the rest of your life?

“Probably Baby Cheeks. Just a touch of colour to bring a face to life. I really love how versatile it is.”

#seo: Hydrobalm Lips

A quick and easy way to refresh your face?

“A light facial massage, cream blush applied high on the cheekbones, and a touch of highlighter on the high points of the face. This instantly brightens the features without ever looking overdone. I then finish with a swipe of HydroBalm Tinted Lipstick to add a colour veil of colour to the lips.”

How do you envision the future of Westman Atelier?

“We will always remain true to our vision of conscious and responsible luxury. I believe we now have the credibility to expand our range beyond colour cosmetics, while staying true to our philosophy: high-performance products that put the skin first.”

David, my husband and co-founder, often says that building a brand is like building a house, brick by brick. I’m not trying to chase virality or trends. I want to stay true to myself. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become less doubtful of myself and my decisions. I’m more convinced than ever that our offering meets a real need.

I know there are many women like me who simply want to look like a slightly better version of themselves, with minimal effort. They also want to find some enjoyment in this routine. And all of this while making lasting improvements to the quality of their skin.
