In the bathroom of Sandrine, the silver model behind the Grey So What account.

Beauty addict with silver hair that makes us dream, Sandrine (@grey_so_what) embarked on her modeling and content creation career at the dawn of her fifties, with the desire to represent women of her age, who at the time were still a little too forgotten in the media. Today, she invited us into her bathroom to talk about her vision of beauty and self-care, and to share all her favorite essentials.

Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Sandrine, I'm 57 years old. I'm from the north of France, but I've been an Alsatian by adoption for over 30 years. I'm married to an extraordinary man and have two grown-up children of whom I'm very proud.

How did you get into silver modeling?

Chance or luck, who knows?

I fully embraced my gray hair at the dawn of my fifties, and realized that women my age, and especially those with gray hair, were poorly, if at all, represented in the media of all kinds (except in classic, outdated schemes: ads for funeral conventions, hearing aids, eyeglasses...). So, out of provocation and a taste for a challenge, I entered the competition organized by the Pomm'Poire lingerie brand created by Anne Montaye. Camille Cerf (Miss France 2015) had just created her own line with the brand and they were looking for 4 muses. I remember writing to them: "I'm 50, my hair is gray, will you dare me?" and, against all odds, they dared me! After that, it was one shoot after another for various brands including Le Slip Français, Armani Beauty... And I was booked by agencies.

With the help of social networks, I became a content creator on Instagram.

Tell us about your vision of beauty...

Beauty is a highly subjective perception that belongs to the individual alone. It's what gives me visual or auditory pleasure... I can find a fabric, a style of dress very beautiful, a person, a piece of music... When I was 16-20, physical beauty was, for me, epitomized by Isabella Rossellini. I regularly spent my pocket money on products for which she was the muse. I had posters of her ads in my bedroom... It's obvious that with age, my vision of beauty has changed and is certainly less dominated by simple physical appearance.

How has it evolved over the years?

Over time, we come to understand that beauty and youth are ephemeral, and that we need to focus on more than just appearance. Today, it's in their heart-body-spirit alignment that I find people beautiful.

Have you always looked after your skin and your well-being?

Yes, with varying degrees of attention depending on life's ups and downs. My mother and grandmother on my father's side were particularly coquettish and well-groomed, even in sickness. The women in my life have always taken great care of themselves. That's my heritage!

"Growing old is not the beginning of the end, but rather the beginning of something else: an insolent freedom and a desire to live life to the full."

How do you look after yourself on a daily basis?

I have rituals that I try not to deviate from: in the morning, a micellar water, the Intense Revolumizing Bi-SerumRevolumizing Bi-Serum Baume Lift Regard Suprêmethe Crème Riche Redensifiante Suprême Patyka and sunscreen. In the evening, I do a double make-up removal and repeat the morning ritual but with a night cream. As for make-up, it's minimalist: a Sunshift Cream Bronzer, the Limitless Lash Mascara and the Color-Haze by Ilia on the cheeks, the Tinted Balm byAugustinus Baderon the lips and that's it! At weekends, I slow down with Yanne Wellnessproducts... I feel like I'm in Brittany, reliving the 3 days I spent with the brand's creator, Bridgitte Dempsey: we gathered seaweed and did a masterclass in an exceptional, magical place!

What's your philosophy on "ageing well"?

I'd go for healthy-aging!

My aim is to remain independent and with all my physical and intellectual faculties. And if I can maintain a certain physical harmony, I'll be the happiest!
I'd be wary of having a clear-cut opinion on ageing well, because I think that everyone should be free to do what they think is right for them, so that they can face their own ageing with peace of mind.

Whether a person uses cosmetic products or has recourse to aesthetic medicine is their own business and should not be subject to any judgment.

What beauty rituals make you feel good about yourself?

Running and ice baths ! I discovered the Wim Hof method method with Laetitia Bléger (Miss France 2004, editor's note); she's a level 2 instructor and lives near me. It's the total immersion in ice-cold water that allows me to stop the mind that I find hard to channel under ordinary circumstances. Sometimes I even immerse myself in nature, in streams. And then when you come out of a session, you feel pumped up and ready to take on any challenge! I've taken the course on the fundamentals of the method, so I'm able to assist Laetitia during her sessions. It's amazing to realize that we're stronger than we think, and that our minds can surprise us and fool us with unfounded fears!

How do you look after your beautiful hair?

I take care of it with ranges created by women with gray hair. I trust them more than the big industrial groups. I have my friend Annika Von Holdt 's " Cupid's Kiss " range for hair care. She has made it a point of honor to have a clean compo and I love her minimalist, chic packaging. Occasionally, once a month, I use the very gentle Silvina London purple shampoo, by silver model Silvina Neder.

Do you have a favorite ingredient you can't live without in your routine?

There's an item I've been using every day or so since March. At first, I was a little skeptical about its effectiveness, but I think regular use is paying off, as my pigmentation spots are beginning to fade. Le Professionnel Anti-Aging LED Mask from Nooance.

Do you have any special memories or advice on skincare or beauty from other women?

I remember one young girl's comment under the first Pomm'Poire group photo: " I want to be like the gray-haired lady when I grow up. It made me so happy: I felt like I'd planted a little seed full of promise for all young girls!

Do you think "silver beauty" has redefined beauty standards?

No. I think the media and brands are still too reluctant to employ seniors in campaigns where they're not expected. The image of women in their fifties (or older) as conveyed by the fashion and/or cosmetics industries is still not very consistent with reality. I've already been offered castings for personas of 70-year-old women... Just as I've also been rejected from certain campaigns because the brand was looking for a fifty-something but I didn't have enough wrinkles...
On the other hand, I'm happy that some lovely brands trust me and ask me for UGC content for their specific ranges, but I'd be even happier if I became the face of one of them internationally!

What messages do you like to convey through your content?

I'd like women my age to tell themselves that there's nothing they can't achieve as long as they're healthy. Two years ago, I got my motorcycle licence, I parachuted from 4000 m, I'm still running, I started Warrior Yoga...
Growing old is not the beginning of the end, but rather the beginning of something else: an insolent freedom and a desire to live life to the full. In any case, we no longer have the time to put off until later what we've always wanted to do. And if my Instagram profile reassures all those who are afraid of old age, then it's perfect!
