In the bathroom of Sandrine, the silver model behind the Grey So What account.
Beauty addict with silver hair that makes us dream, Sandrine (@grey_so_what) embarked on her modeling and content creation career at the dawn of her fifties, with the desire to represent women of her age, who at the time were still a little too forgotten in the media. Today, she invited us into her bathroom to talk about her vision of beauty and self-care, and to share all her favorite essentials.
How did you get into silver modeling?
Chance or luck, who knows?
I fully embraced my gray hair at the dawn of my fifties, and realized that women my age, and especially those with gray hair, were poorly, if at all, represented in the media of all kinds (except in classic, outdated schemes: ads for funeral conventions, hearing aids, eyeglasses...). So, out of provocation and a taste for a challenge, I entered the competition organized by the Pomm'Poire lingerie brand created by Anne Montaye. Camille Cerf (Miss France 2015) had just created her own line with the brand and they were looking for 4 muses. I remember writing to them: "I'm 50, my hair is gray, will you dare me?" and, against all odds, they dared me! After that, it was one shoot after another for various brands including Le Slip Français, Armani Beauty... And I was booked by agencies.
With the help of social networks, I became a content creator on Instagram.
Tell us about your vision of beauty...
Beauty is a highly subjective perception that belongs to the individual alone. It's what gives me visual or auditory pleasure... I can find a fabric, a style of dress very beautiful, a person, a piece of music... When I was 16-20, physical beauty was, for me, epitomized by Isabella Rossellini. I regularly spent my pocket money on products for which she was the muse. I had posters of her ads in my bedroom... It's obvious that with age, my vision of beauty has changed and is certainly less dominated by simple physical appearance.
Have you always looked after your skin and your well-being?
Yes, with varying degrees of attention depending on life's ups and downs. My mother and grandmother on my father's side were particularly coquettish and well-groomed, even in sickness. The women in my life have always taken great care of themselves. That's my heritage!
"Growing old is not the beginning of the end, but rather the beginning of something else: an insolent freedom and a desire to live life to the full."
What's your philosophy on "ageing well"?
I'd go for healthy-aging!
My aim is to remain independent and with all my physical and intellectual faculties. And if I can maintain a certain physical harmony, I'll be the happiest!
I'd be wary of having a clear-cut opinion on ageing well, because I think that everyone should be free to do what they think is right for them, so that they can face their own ageing with peace of mind.
Whether a person uses cosmetic products or has recourse to aesthetic medicine is their own business and should not be subject to any judgment.
How do you look after your beautiful hair?
I take care of it with ranges created by women with gray hair. I trust them more than the big industrial groups. I have my friend Annika Von Holdt 's " Cupid's Kiss " range for hair care. She has made it a point of honor to have a clean compo and I love her minimalist, chic packaging. Occasionally, once a month, I use the very gentle Silvina London purple shampoo, by silver model Silvina Neder.
Do you have a favorite ingredient you can't live without in your routine?
There's an item I've been using every day or so since March. At first, I was a little skeptical about its effectiveness, but I think regular use is paying off, as my pigmentation spots are beginning to fade. Le Professionnel Anti-Aging LED Mask from Nooance.
Do you think "silver beauty" has redefined beauty standards?
No. I think the media and brands are still too reluctant to employ seniors in campaigns where they're not expected. The image of women in their fifties (or older) as conveyed by the fashion and/or cosmetics industries is still not very consistent with reality. I've already been offered castings for personas of 70-year-old women... Just as I've also been rejected from certain campaigns because the brand was looking for a fifty-something but I didn't have enough wrinkles...
On the other hand, I'm happy that some lovely brands trust me and ask me for UGC content for their specific ranges, but I'd be even happier if I became the face of one of them internationally!
