Under the mask: how to manage skin in crisis?
Small pimples, major sensitivities, tight, itchy skin... If the surgical mask or fabric mask is undoubtedly one of our best allies in the fight against COVID-19, it also gives our skin a run for its money. Here's our advice on how to soothe and rebalance your skin.
I have pimples
If our skin is easily prone to imperfections without the mask, the mask can make the phenomenon worse... The cause is the accumulation of several factors: heat, humidity (generated by breathing and talking), perspiration and above all friction of the mask, form an explosive cocktail that calls on our skin to protect itself, encouraging it to create more sebum than usual. Pores become clogged and pimples appear. To minimize imperfections, here are a few tips:
- Every evening, remove make-up thoroughly with a gentle purifying duo, such as Cleansing Balm and Cleansing Gel Oh My Cream Skincare.
- Moisturize without overloading with Clearcalm3 Rehydrating Cream Gel Ren Skincarewhich also has calming properties.
- In the evening or even during the day, use a targeted skin care product such as Age Bright Clearing Serum Dermalogica, ideal for gently purifying and treating both inflamed pimples and microcysts (small pimples under the skin).
- Whether or not you're prone to pimples, change your mask regularly to limit the proliferation of bacteria.
- If possible, swap your liquid foundation for a mineral powder foundation to conceal while treating the skin. We're thinking in particular of Pure Pressed Base Jane Iredale.
- 1 or 2 times a week, take the time toapply a purifying mask. If skin is also dehydrated, the'Aura Manuka Honey Mask Antipodes is perfect, and can even be used as a night cream!
I have redness
The main cause? The repeated rubbing of the mask, which alters our skin barrier. Some disposable masks are also treated with irritating chemicals, which adds a not inconsiderable factor. Without a shield, redness appears and the skin heats up and itches. Wearing a mask then becomes extremely uncomfortable. We can then :
- Forget your micellar water and use a double cleansing cleansing withHuile Démaquillante Délicate Rosier Sauvage followed by Camellia & Rose Gentle Moisturizing Cleanser Pai Skincare.
- Moisturize, soothe and strengthen skin flora to provide a shield with Hydra-Soothing Rich Cream Patyka and Probiotic Concentrate Aurelia Probiotic.
- Relieve discomfort with a soothing, rehydrating mask twice a week, ideally left on overnight, as withEvercalm Ultra-Comforting Soothing Mask Ren Skincare or apply Evercalm Night Balm from the same brand.
- Whenever possible, use fabric masks (AFNOR-certified for maximum protection against the virus).
My skin is completely parched
Here again, it's the rubbing that can quickly leave your skin feeling "cardboardy"... As the skin barrier is altered by repeated rubbing of the mask, it no longer retains water as well. water in the tissues and evaporates. Add to this the heat, and you have the perfect combo for thirsty skin. To counter this, we can :
- Use a moisturizing spray as with Multi-Active Toner Dermalogica morning and evening, even during the day. Caution: be patient before reapplying the mask to avoid creating a humid climate that could alter its effectiveness.
- At the end of each morning's routine, apply a skin care oilto strengthen the skin mantle and prevent water loss. The Daily Vitamin Infusion Indie Lee is perfect for this role, thanks to its ceramides.
- Use a super-moisturizing mask to replenish moisture reserves and relieve discomfort, at least once a week, as with the Moisturising Mask Susanne Kaufmann.
- For very dry, irritated skin, applyEgyptian Magic (including lips).
- Drink, drink, drink... as the skin is the last organ to absorb water, always having a glass of water to hand or a water bottle is the best way to remember.
We hope our little tips will help you get through this complicated period, and would also like to thank all those who are working every day to care for the most vulnerable during the pandemic ❤️
