We Tried It for You... The Rebozo, an Ancient Ritual Designed for Women

Some treatments end gently, and others end with a genuine embrace. The rebozo ritual falls into the latter category. An integral part of the Kundalini Bliss treatment at Spa EÏA, this ancient ritual from Mexico offers a true sense of renewal for the body. Here’s everything you need to know about this practice designed for women and new mothers, which revitalizes both body and mind.

The Rebozo, an ancient ritual for restoring the body's balance

Some treatments relax the skin’s surface, sculpt facial features, or reveal radiance, and then there are those that seem to realign the entire body. The Rebozo belongs to this second category. Renowned as the ideal treatment for reconnecting with one’s body and sensations after childbirth, the Rebozo is in fact much more than a postpartum treatment—it is a true ritual aimed at rebalancing the body’s entire energy. Rocked and then wrapped in a long woven cotton scarf, the body is gently drawn in, as if gathered around its center. It is this sensation of being held—rather than simply massaged—that sets this ritual apart and explains why its significance today extends far beyond its original purpose.

A Closer Look at the Rebozo: What Is It?

Originally, the Rebozo refers to a traditional Mexican shawl, made of cotton or silk, handwoven and popularized by midwives (parteras), who use it to support women during the major stages of motherhood: during pregnancy to cradle the baby and relieve back pain, during childbirth to relax the pelvis between contractions, and especially after birth, when tradition dictates that the new mother remain in bed for about forty days to bond with her baby. The Rebozo ritual complements this period by gently compressing the body around several key points, helping it literally regain its shape after pregnancy.

Beyond its symbolic and practical nature, it is used in many ways—as a baby carrier, a bundle, a makeshift hammock, or simply a scarf draped over the shoulders. It is this versatility—and its ability to adapt to all body types—that has allowed the Rebozo to transcend its original use and become a wellness ritual in its own right, capable of supporting other moments of transition in a woman’s life.

The Benefits of Tightening the Pelvis with a Rebozo

Strengthening the pelvic floor has multiple benefits. It helps to:

  • Relieve physical pain in the abdominal area, lower back, sacrum, coccyx, and perineum by rebalancing the skeletal and muscular structures to alleviate these tensions. As a result, it can also help relieve digestive or urogynecological issues.

  • Improve posture and stability, thereby helping to prevent back pain, while supporting perineal rehabilitation by reducing pressure on this delicate area after childbirth.

  • Accelerate the body's recovery at the muscular and joint levels, and help improve blood and lymphatic circulation.

  • Release emotions and relieve stress.

At the same time, the Rebozo offers a moment of deep relaxation—as if time were suspended—cut off from the outside world, allowing you to reconnect with your body and your sensations, and to regain a sense of body awareness and self-confidence.

Who is the Rebozo for?

While the Rebozo remains inextricably linked to the postpartum period and motherhood, its use is not limited to those contexts. The same act of drawing in and refocusing can accompany other pivotal moments in a woman’s life—such as menopause, a breakup, a loss, or any other time of major upheaval—as well as happier milestones, or even when there’s simply a need to reconnect with oneself. The goal remains the same regardless of the situation: to symbolically bring one phase to a close in order to move forward more confidently toward the next, and to restore a sense of confidence and security to both body and mind.

An almost therapeutic form of conditioning

Located within the Hôtel de Buci in Paris, the EÏA Spa feels like a true sanctuary of well-being, inviting guests on a sensory journey. Its signature treatment, the Kundalini Bliss, is a deeply holistic and almost therapeutic experience designed to realign the body toward greater gentleness and slowness, while awakening creative energy. Even before the treatment begins, the therapist takes the time to explain the rationale behind the treatment and conducts an initial consultation to identify sources of tension, blockages, and current needs… A thorough assessment to ensure the massage does much more than just promote relaxation!

A massage that gently reawakens your energy

Kundalini Bliss, created by the EÏA Spa, in collaboration with the Womanizer brand, is centered around the sacral chakra, which holistic traditions consider the seat of creativity, vitality, and sensuality. The goal goes far beyond immediate well-being; it’s about naturally stimulating the production of hormones associated with relaxation, such as oxytocin, endorphins, and serotonin. The methods used to achieve this are varied and all designed to inspire true relaxation: light stroking, slow movements, moderate pressure...

Precise, rhythmic—even lulling—movements, accompanied by the background sounds, the practitioner’s gentle voice, and steady breathing, not to mention the resonant vibrations of the Tibetan singing bowls that bring the treatment to a close.

The treatment begins with a leg massage, then moves up along the back, with special attention paid to the lower back and hips—areas often overlooked in traditional massages. The massage continues toward the head and face, before concluding with the abdomen. This slow and gentle progression gently awakens each area, as if to circulate energy throughout the body.

The Rebozo wrap to conclude the treatment

Set to the rhythm of the soundscape, which grows increasingly gentle, the session concludes with the gesture that gives the treatment its full meaning: the Rebozo wrap. Using the shawl, the practitioner wraps the body tightly around several key points in a slow, enveloping motion—almost like a lullaby. A moment suspended in time, which seems to bring the body back together after having awakened and stimulated it. It is this contrast that makes this moment so memorable: the closing is as gentle as the opening had been slightly more intense.

Our " Review(s) " on the Kundalini Bliss treatment

“Kundalini Bliss is much more than just a massage: it’s a deeply sensory experience that transports the entire body. An hour and a half just for yourself, to rekindle a spark that may have dimmed due to the stress of returning to school or the transition into fall. Enveloping sounds, firm pressure and gentle strokes, Tibetan singing bowls, deep tissue massage, followed by pelvic realignment and the intoxicating scent of Palo Santo… Everything is designed to relieve the body of its deepest-seated tensions and unleash a true sense of balance between inner peace and renewed energy.  You emerge from this interlude feeling soothed, but above all, reconnected to a body that we sometimes tend to forget amid the rhythm of daily life. A ritual we wholeheartedly recommend to all those who need—more than just a treatment—a true break to reconnect with themselves.” — Elsa, Editorial Director

The 90-minute treatment costs €190.
