How to choose the right deodorant?

To choose the right deodoranttwo criteria come into play: format and composition. But between the different lengths of protection, spray and roll-on formats, mini and compressed, the nuances between natural and organic deodorants, and the many promises about effectiveness and the absence of harmful substances, choosing the right deodorantisn't so easy... To help you make the right choice, discover our advice!

Which active ingredients to avoid in deodorants?

To help you make the right choice on the shelves, here's a list of the main ingredients most often found in "conventional" deodorants.

  • Phthalates: their harmful effects mainly affect fertility
  • Triclosan: an endocrine disruptor associated with reproductive effects
  • Denatured alcohol: irritant, not recommended for sensitive skin
  • Talc: its origin is often uncertain. Depending on the deposit from which it was extracted, it may contain mineral fibers classified in the same way as asbestos fibers.

In reality, deodorant and antiperspirant fall into two quite distinct categories, in terms of both composition and mode of action.

Theantiperspirant, via an agent (e.g. aluminum salts), will form a layer over the sweat glands and thus tighten the skin pores. This prevents, at least in part, the healthy, natural process of perspiration from taking place normally.

A deodorant, on the other hand, doesn't combat the production of sweat, but helps mask those odors we're trying to avoid. With its antibacterial agents and fragrances, deodorant masks unpleasant odours and eliminates the bacteria that cause them, or focuses on odour absorption, or combines these two modes of action.

What type of deodorant should I choose?

They come in different formats, so the choice will depend first and foremost on your preferences, but also on the cause of your perspiration.

  • Deodorant spray: It's quick and easy to apply and dries quickly.
  • Roll-on / roll-on deodorant: It doesn't smell strong in the room and is environmentally friendly.
  • Stick deodorant: less greasy than cream, but a little more nourishing than roll-on.
  • Cream deodorant: cares for underarm skin, preventing it from drying out.

What's the best natural deodorant?

An essential hygiene product, it is used every day to act on the underarms. In this area, where the skin is particularly fragile, skin care products penetrate the body more easily with repeated use. That's why it's a good idea to opt for a natural deodorant with more respectful ingredients. And let's not forget the environment: when you wash, all the active ingredients are eliminated in wastewater. The problem is that some active ingredients are so small that sewage treatment plants are unable to "sort" them out. So they end up polluting the water...
