We've tested it for you... BBL, the pulsed-light treatment to target blemishes, redness and aging skin.

Looking for a treatment that targets the signs of aging and boosts your skin's radiance? Our Communications Director, Fanny, tested the BBL treatment for you at Doctor Olivier Claude's practice. We tell you all about this new pulsed-light treatment capable of treating a variety of skin problems, including the signs of photoaging.

What exactly is BBL?

No, we're not talking about Brazilian Butt Lift here, but Broad Band Light, also known as broad spectrum light. BBL treatment is a new generation of intense pulsed light therapy. This light therapy technique targets the superficial layers of the skin, enabling cells to regenerate on a new, healthier, clearer and firmer layer

"This new BBL generation offers a number of advantages, including the ability to treat faster and with simpler aftercare. Fewer sessions will be needed to treat vascular or pigmentary problems on the face and body. Active acne is also one of BBL's targets." - Doctor Olivier Claude

How does pulsed light affect the skin?

The process involves depositing light energy in the form of pulsed light at different frequencies on the skin. Pulsed light acts on the skin by creating small thermal lesions that stimulate the cells that produce collagen-producing cellscells, triggering the skin's regeneration process.

What's more, light acts in multiple layers of the skin and, depending on the frequency used, can treat pigmented lesions, targeting the melanin that forms brown spots and the broken blood vessels that create redness and rosacea

The benefits of BBL for the skin

BBL treatment is indicated to target :

  • Pigmentation spots (brown spots, freckles or age spots)

  • Acne and scars

  • Diffuse redness (rosacea, couperose, angiomas and telangiectasias)

  • Visible Pores

  • Deep lesions

  • Fine lines and aging skin

  • Collagen and elastin synthesis

Results, course of treatment and frequency

A BBL session with Dr. Olivier Claude lasts between 1h and 1h30 and is personalized to the needs and wishes of each patient. The skin may show slight redness for 1 to 2 days, but there is no need to socialize.BBL results appear progressively over the weeks, and are visible within 2 to 5 weeks of treatment. Doctor Olivier Claude advises:"2 to 4 sessions spaced at least 4 weeks apart. Then 1 to 2 sessions per year are sufficient for maintenance."

Is BBL suitable for all skin types? Are there any contraindications?

BBL can treat all skin types: thick, combination or oily. However, people with very dark complexions are not ideal candidates for this treatment due to the risk of hyperpigmentation. The treatment is also contraindicated for people with permanent make-up tattoos, as the light energy can remove the tattoos from the targeted area.

Please note: before a BBL treatment, it's important not to tan, and to avoid the sun for at least 15 days before and 15 days after each session.

Fanny's opinion on BBL skincare

"I've always had small vessels on the sides of my nose and cheeks, with a patch of rosacea on my right cheek. In 3 sessions (4 weeks apart), my redness almost disappeared. What's most impressive is the uniformity of my complexion. This treatment erases all the little imperfections (spots, scars, vessels...), I've gained in radiance, my skin is more luminous and less dull!"

How does this treatment differ from other photorejuvenation treatments?

Unlike conventional intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment, BBL is more effective and gentler on the skin. Doctor Olivier Claude explains:"Thanks to its 2 lamps that emit pulsed light simultaneously, we can control the intensity of each movement to deliver the optimum amount of energy into the skin."

What's more, all areas of the body most exposed to the sun (such as the neck, back of hands, décolleté and back) can be treated with BBL. Sessions are also more comfortable than conventional IPL: "Pulses are broken down into 4 pulses/sec, reducing the sensation of skin overheating. BBL technology is also equipped with an adjustable cooling system (between 0°C and 30° C) depending on the lesion to be treated, the skin's colour and the patient's sensitivity."
