How do I make a facial scrub?

When it comes to facial scrubs, there are two schools of thought. There are the faint-hearted, who never do it, and the aficionados of exfoliating treatments and peels. peelings ! And while grainy scrubs are the most popular, there are actually other types of exfoliator more suited to all skin types. We'd also like to take this opportunity to explain how to make a homemade face scrub and who the best exfoliators are.exfoliation at Oh My Cream.

What are the best face scrubs?

To eliminate dead skin cells, we systematically recommend chemical or enzymatic exfoliation. These 2 types of exfoliation boost cell renewal, improve the penetration of active ingredients applied later, and enhance skin's softness and radiance. However, exfoliation should not be synonymous with irritation.. That's why we systematically recommend chemical or enzymatic exfoliation.

How do they differ from "mechanical" exfoliation? Mechanical exfoliation is a way of exfoliating the skin without using grains. If exfoliation is called "enzymatic", it's because the job is done by enzymes, 100% natural agents that nibble away at the bonds that hold cells together. This system is the gentlest and has the advantage of being suitable for all skin types. In fact, it's the exfoliation of choice for sensitive skin. !

But enzymes don't have the only monopoly on a flawless complexion: there are also fruit acids. These act in the same way as enzymes, but in a more powerful and targeted way. They are ideal for particularly stubborn blemishes and marks. On the other hand, chemical exfoliation is not recommended for reactive skin.

Frequency, these two types of exfoliation can be performed 2 to 3 times a week, depending on the sensitivity of your skin, or even daily for certain very specific exfoliants such as the Daily Microfoliant Dermalogicawhich is very gentle. If you're not used to exfoliating, we recommend starting with once a week. You can then decide whether or not to increase the frequency. If you notice more dehydration or redness, the product is too strong or the frequency too high. For a more powerful mask exfoliant, such as Glycolactic Masque Eclat Peau Neuve Ren Skincare, once or twice a week maximum is more than enough.

What are the best ingredients for an effective facial scrub?

The alpha-hydroxy acids or AHAs s (also known as fruit acids) most commonly used in cosmetics are glycolic acid and lactic acid. Generally speaking, their effects vary according to their concentration, the pH of the formulation and whether or not derivatives are used... Known for their exfoliating powers, they dissolve the bonds between dead cells to reveal a clearer, smoother complexion. While glycolic acid is recommended for resistant skin, lactic acid in small concentrations is ideal for sensitive skin because it is also moisturizing.

What you need to know about fruit acids :

Glycolic acid: anti-aging and regenerating exfoliant

Lactic acid: lightening and smoothing exfoliant

Salicylic acid (a beta hydroxy acid): also an exfoliant, it's an excellent anti-inflammatory agent for blemish-prone skin.

How do I make a "Do It Yourself" facial scrub at home?

First and foremost, just because it's natural and homemade doesn't necessarily mean it's gentle and suitable for everyone... This recipe for homemade scrub although rather "basic", is not recommended for the most fragile skins or in cases of moderate imperfections (the grains risk opening up pimples and spreading the bacteria responsible for imperfections). This is a "stop-gap" recipe, as nothing can replace a perfectly formulated exfoliant with even more advanced active ingredients. Last but not least homemade face scrub cannot be preserved, and is for single use only.

Ingredients & dosage :

  • 1 tablespoon rolled oats
  • 1 tablespoon sweet almond or coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon liquid honey

Recipe:

  • In a blender, finely blend the rolled oats to reduce them to a powder.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to the mixture.
  • Add the tablespoon of liquid honey.
  • Mix and apply to the face using gentle, circular movements. Leave on for 10 minutes, then rinse off.
  • Follow with your usual routine.

What type of facial scrub is right for my skin type?

I have normal to dry, dehydrated skin.

In this case, I opt for a nourishing facial scrub. For example, I can use theHydro Masque Exfoliant Dermalogica. Featuring bamboo-based exfoliating spheres that melt on contact with the skin, it compensates for exfoliation with its moisturizing action. So you can enjoy exfoliation without fear of discomfort and redness!

I have combination to oily skin prone to imperfections.

I opt for a purifying facial scrub. Here again, I avoid grains and turn to the mask Prism Herbivore : with its rainbow packaging and, above all, its AHA & BHA, there's no doubt that this grain-free exfoliating maskis sure to give even the dullest complexions a radiant glow. Bonus: an action on skin texture and small pimples, for a skin reset!
