All you need to know about niacinamide, the ultra-efficient active ingredient that does it all

It's the active ingredient that's in the news a lot at the moment: niacinamide. Renowned for its "Photoshop" effect on the skin, this form of Vitamin B3 is particularly loved by combination to oily skin, as well as sensitive skin, thanks to its gentle action on pores, inflammation and blemishes. Let's take a look at this ultra-efficient active ingredient to add to your beauty routine.

What is niacinamide?

Niacinamide is one of three forms of vitamin B3, a vitamin that is indispensable to our organism since it plays a major role in cellular metabolism, and is required for the production of the coenzymes NAD and NADP (essential coenzymes in the energy transfer process at the heart of cells). In beauty, niacinamide is known for its many benefits, notably in the fight against skin ageing, irritation and inflammation.

What are the benefits of niacinamide?

Equally suited to combination to oily skin thanks to its action on blemishes and imperfections, as well as mature skin to attenuate the signs of aging, niacinamide is particularly recommended for sensitive skin thanks to its great gentleness. In particular, it acts on :

  • Skin hydration : niacinamide reinforces the skin's hydrolipidic film and barrier to retain moisture. It also reduces water loss, helping the stratum corneum to maintain optimal moisture levels to prevent the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

  • Excess sebum and blemishes: niacinamide helps regulate sebum levels to protect against clogged pores at the root of blackheads and blackheads.

  • Skin aging and texture: niacinamide helps stimulate collagen synthesis and also improves skin firmness and elasticity. It also helps improve skin texture by reducing the appearance of dilated pores and wrinkles.

  • Redness and irritation: thanks to its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, niacinamide helps calm redness, irritation and inflammation.

  • Pigmentation spots: it helps reduce brown spots and hyperpigmentation , and promotes an even, luminous complexion. What's more, thanks to its antioxidant properties, it protects the skin against damage caused by free radicals and UV rays responsible for premature aging.

What assets should it be combined with?

Retinol and niacinamide

If niacinamide is gentle and well tolerated by all skin types, retinol can be drying and can sometimes cause irritation. The combination of these two active ingredients is beneficial for the skin, and particularly suited to skin affected by imperfections and the first wrinkles. Retinol helps stimulate collagen and elastin synthesis, while niacinamide counteracts the drying effect of retinol by maintaining the skin's moisture level, regulating sebum production and protecting against imperfections. Be sure to save your retinol treatment for the evening.

Niacinamide and salicylic acid

Salicylic acid is an exfoliating and purifying active ingredient renowned for its action on blemishes. According to a study published in Current Drug Delivery, when salicylic acid is combined with niacinamide, the permeability of the hydrolipidic film is enhanced, thereby reducing skin dehydration

Vitamin C and niacinamide

Vitamin C and niacinamide have similar benefits, since both vitamins act on skin tone uniformity, pigmentation spots, skin radiance and protection against the effects of free radicals. However, they act differently and can be safely combined to target skin aging factors and correct age spots and signs.
