What are the best alternatives to micellar water?

For the record, micellar water first saw the light of day backstage at fashion shows some twenty years ago. At the time, micellar water was truly revolutionary! At last, a product that made it possible to remove make-up quickly and waterlessly between looks. Highly acclaimed by make-up artists, micellar water made a name for itself in magazines and invaded the make-up remover market... But is it really the best way to remove make-up? At Oh My Cream, we prefer the alternatives and explain why.

What is micellar water?

Micellar water is an aqueous solution made up of micelles. Micelles are small particles of surfactant which attract impurities (make-up, sebum, pollution, etc.) and thus both cleanse and remove make-up from the skin. Some micellar waters also contain perfume or alcohol... Ultimately, micellar waters are detergents which, over time, can seriously damage the skin's hydrolipidic barrier.

What's more, micellar water is generally marketed as a product to be used with a cotton pad to remove make-up, and does not require rinsing. And therein lies the problem... Would you consider not rinsing your face after applying soap? Well, it's the same with micellar water: if you don't rinse off a detergent product, you leave some of the surfactants and impurities on your face

Over time, it's not uncommon to observe significant dehydration, sensitivities and sometimes even imperfections

In absolute terms, micellar water is a very practical product! But it's better to keep it as a back-up solution, for those lazy evenings when it's better than nothing ;-)

Why is micellar water not very good for the skin?

Even if micellar water is a rather practical and effective make-up remover (when you remember to rinse your face afterwards!), it still has several limitations

Firstly, the particles it contains are, for the most part, polluting for the environment. What's more, its application requires the use of cotton pads, producing waste that could easily be avoided. What's more, micellar waters are not always skin-friendly. For example, their formulas contain sulfates, alcohol and perfume. Daily use of micellar water can therefore, over time, damage the skin's hydrolipidic barrier and provoke an armada of unwanted skin reactions. If you have dry skin, it's likely to be even more uncomfortable; if you have sensitive skin, it's likely to be even more sensitized; and if you have oily skin, it's likely to produce even more sebum to defend itself.

What about organic micellar waters? They may contain surfactants (less harmful to the environment, of course), but they can be irritating to your skin. The best thing to do, then, is to banish micellar waters from your beauty routine and turn to more skin-friendly alternatives!

Double cleansing, the key to beautiful skin

On a daily basis, it's essential to remove all make-up and impurities from the face before going to bed. That's why, at Oh My Cream, we swear by the double cleansing which involves cleansing the face in two stages: first with a greasy cleanser (alternative: micellar water) and then with a cleanser (foaming or non-foaming). And it's an essential gesture that can transform the skin because :

  1. It's the first anti-ageing step, because deeply cleansed skin means slower ageing!

  2. You're really cleansing your skin and reducing imperfections (including blackheads, uneven skin texture and other blemishes).

  3. Your protective barrier is preserved, and discomfort and redness are a distant memory!

  4. The other treatments work 100% and your skin has all night to regenerate optimally.

#seo: micellar water alternative

The best alternatives to micellar water

At Oh My Cream, we make a point of advising you to use a natural make-up remover every evening, one that's not micellar water! Our preferred alternative to micellar water?Cleansing oil(and cleansing balms too). There's nothing like an oily substance to dissolve make-up, sunscreen residue or pollution.

Nothing can resist an oil or make-up remover balm (even waterproof mascara), which are also very gentle on the skin and don't require cotton pads.

What's more, these products are a pleasure to use: there's nothing like a quick facial massage with an oil or make-up-removing balm to get the day off to a good start!

Simply apply a small amount to a dry face and massage to dissolve all impurities. Rinse with lukewarm water and you're done! Finally, to complete make-up removal, follow up with a facial cleanser.

And even if you have combination to oily skin, make-up-removing oils and balms can be just the thing for you, even helping to regulate your sebum secretion. By mimicking sebum, cleansing oils encourage combination to oily skin to produce less sebum over time. These are ideal alternatives to micellar water for all skin types!

If you had to introduce just one new beauty habit, it would definitely be the double cleansing. Avoid daily use of micellar water (for emergencies only!).
