I'm pregnant: which active ingredients should I avoid?

If there's one period of upheaval when all our habits are put under the microscope, it's pregnancy. A quick inspection of our bathroom shelves is in order... but without panicking. We bear in mind that the impact of cosmetics on the baby is very limited, and that the precautionary principle applies. So there's no need to panic if you think you've used a product with non-recommended active ingredients. In this article, we reveal the active ingredients to avoid if you're pregnant, as well as the right routine to adopt when expecting a baby...

Avoid essential oils during pregnancy

Essential oils are natural active ingredients derived from plants. So you guessed it: just because they're natural ingredients doesn't mean they're a panacea. The reason? Essential oils pass into the bloodstream, which serves as a vehicle for nourishing the unborn child. Unfortunately, some essential oils are too stimulating. Essential oils such as peppermint, eucalyptus globulus and mentholated eucalyptus, rosemary and camphor should be avoided throughout pregnancy (and if you're breast-feeding).

On the other hand, many essential oils pose no problem at all and can even relieve nausea, as in the case of ginger, for example. Bear in mind, however, that the concentration of essential oils in your beauty products is very low, and they are diluted with other ingredients. In case of doubt, don't hesitate to ask your doctor for advice, or avoid them altogether if you don't feel comfortable using them.

Retinol (or vitamin A) and fruit acids

Retinol can be found in many skin care products (creams, serums and oils). This super-active ingredient derived from vitamin A helps combat skin aging, persistent scars and blemishes. The catch is that it is highly stimulating and strictly forbidden if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant ! Although retinol, present in small doses in a beauty product, can hardly pass the skin barrier, its use is strongly discouraged throughout pregnancy as a precautionary measure

As far as fruit acids are concerned, it all depends on whether you were accustomed to using them before your pregnancy. Salicylic acid is best avoided in high doses and when products containing it are not rinsed. Salicylic acid can be found everywhere: in cleansers, moisturizers, oils and masks. However, in small doses and rinsed off, its presence is not risky. Note: all other exfoliants, such as glycolic acid, lactic acid and AHA (fruit acids), are permitted in low concentrations, and only if you were used to using them before becoming pregnant.

Chemical sunscreens

To make things easier for you during this period of heightened skin sensitivity, we recommend mineral sunscreens. Chemical filters are not at all bad for the skin, but they are sometimes less well tolerated. Pregnancy is also a time when your skin's sensitivity can change. If you're used to feeling a little tingling with your beloved sunscreen, now's the time to try it, now's the time to try an equivalent cosmetic product with mineral filters..

Benzoyl peroxide

This active ingredient is a compound found in conventional anti-acne products (such as topical creams) prescribed by dermatologists. prescribed by dermatologists. It will not normally be prescribed to pregnant women, but as you can see, it's better to leave it in the cupboard if it dates from before pregnancy. So don't hesitate to ask your health professional if you were on dermatological treatment at the very beginning of your pregnancy.

Potential endocrine disruptors

It's THE scary, nebulous term because it encompasses so many active ingredients. They are synthetic substances that can influence hormonal secretions.. Here again, don't panic, we're in luck, because European regulations protect us very well (they're the strictest in the world). But you can still pass by if you detect phthalates or triclosan (the latter is very present in toothpastes and deodorants). And rest assured, at Oh My Cream, these 2 ingredients are totally absent from the formulas of our partner brands.
