We tested it for you... The treatment to (truly) get rid of dark spots

After summer, as your tan gradually fades, dark spots resurface. And sometimes even the most expert skincare routine isn’t enough to even out these skin tone irregularities. That’s why we tested Innerskin’s BabyFace Lase® Ultra treatment for you: the regenerating treatment that promises to restore smooth, radiant skin.

A Closer Look at Pigment Spots and Hyperpigmentation

We’re probably not telling you anything new when we say that dark spots are among the unpleasant surprises of the new season… After summer, it’s not uncommon to see these discolorations—which seemed to be nowhere to be found at the height of the season—appear on the face, hands, or décolletage. But not all spots are the same, and most importantly, they don’t all have the same cause: some are the result of years of sun exposure, others are due to hormonal changes, and still others are simply the mark of a poorly healed breakout. Before you can find the right solution, you need to understand what exactly you’re trying to treat. We’ll tell you more in this article on hyperpigmentation…

Why do we have more stains when school starts?

That’s the revealing effect of a tan! Because as long as the tan is even, it conceals irregularities in the complexion. The problem is that a tan doesn’t fade evenly: the areas most exposed to the sun—or those more prone to hyperpigmentation —retain their pigment longer than the rest of the face, highlighting spots that seemed absent at the height of the season. But there’s also another factor to consider: the latency period of melanogenesis. When exposed to UV rays, melanocytes produce melanin as a protective mechanism, but this production isn’t instantaneous and can continue for several weeks after exposure.

A spot that forms in July may therefore not become truly visible until September, once the process is complete. Finally, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation must also be taken into account. A sunburn, a bug bite, a breakout, or skin irritation during the summer triggers an inflammatory reaction that causes melanocytes to overproduce melanin in that specific area. This mark often takes several weeks to fully appear and then fade, which is why it’s more noticeable when school starts again.

Melasma, lentigines, brown spots: How can you tell them apart?

These three terms are often confused, but they are actually quite different:

  • Lentigines, also known as “sunspots” or actinic lentigines, are well-defined spots with sharp edges and a fairly uniform brow colour . They result from cumulative UV exposure over many years, appear gradually with age on areas chronically exposed to the sun—such as the face, hands, neck, and forearms—do not really fluctuate with the seasons once they have developed, and are not related to hormones.

  • Melasma, also known as chloasma, appears as larger patches with blurred, irregular edges that are generally symmetrical and located on the forehead, cheeks, upper lip, or jawline. It is often linked to a hormonal predisposition and is very common during pregnancy or while taking hormonal birth control, with increased sensitivity to UV rays as well as to heat and visible light. This explains why it primarily affects women and those with darker skin tones.

  • There are also post-inflammatory spots, which follow the exact shape of a previous lesion (acne pimple, cut, irritation), and ephelides—classic freckles of genetic origin—that appear From childhood and fade in the winter, mainly in fair-skinned individuals.

What is BabyFace Lase® Ultra?

BabyFace Lase® Ultra is a cutting-edge technology offered by Innerskin that lives up to its name, as it is said to deliver a true “baby-skin” effect. The technology relies on a non-ablative, fractional thulium 1927 nm laser. This device emits ultra-precise light pulses to create invisible microchannels in the stratum corneum and superficial dermis, without altering the skin’s surface. By heating these micro-channels, the laser triggers the cellular regeneration process to stimulate collagen and elastin synthesis, enabling the skin to better absorb the active ingredients applied after the session. It is precisely this combination of laser and active ingredients that makes this powerful treatment unique—and requires no downtime!

What are the benefits?

Designed to significantly improve skin tone and texture, BabyFace Lase® Ultra addresses a variety of skin concerns. It helps:

  • Firm the skin and smooth fine lines by stimulating collagen and elastin production

  • Helps reduce pigmentation spots by breaking down excess melanin deposits

  • Tighten enlarged pores for a finer, more even skin texture

  • Reduce the appearance of scars and residual marks

  • Correct signs of aging caused by repeated sun exposure and hyperpigmentation

For what types of issues?

Suitable for all skin types looking to improve their skin’s texture, it is particularly recommended for addressing pigmentation spots, a dull or uneven complexion, enlarged pores, and uneven skin tone, as well as fine lines, the first signs of aging, and residual marks.

The Selection of Assets

This is one of the hallmarks of the treatment: active ingredients selected based on the skin concerns identified during the skin assessment. Vitamin C enhances radiance and provides antioxidant protection for dull or tired complexions. Tranexamic acid specifically targets dark spots, melasma, and hyperpigmentation. Vitamin A promotes cell renewal, which helps combat blemishes and the first signs of aging. Finally, resveratrol acts as a soothing antioxidant, making it particularly suitable for sensitive or reactive skin.

Key Steps

The session begins with a two-step facial cleansing to remove makeup and impurities and prepare the skin for the laser treatment under optimal conditions. Next, an anesthetic cream is applied to protect the skin, followed by the laser treatment across the entire face for 15 to 20 minutes. After the laser treatment, the microchannels—which are still open—allow for the application of the serum selected during the consultation. To soothe the skin, a hydrating mask is left on for a few minutes before the session concludes with the application of a soothing moisturizer and SPF 50.

Immediate Results

If your skin appears rosy after the session (a normal reaction to the laser’s heat), the redness will gradually fade over the next few days, giving way to a more even, luminous, and refreshed complexion. In the days that follow, the skin may also appear slightly grainy for 24 to 48 hours, while the treated micro-areas complete their regeneration. There’s no reason why you can’t resume normal activities From the very next day: that’s precisely the advantage of this sub-ablative laser, which requires no downtime.

Our "Baby Face" treatment Review(s)

“Not for the faint of heart! While the treatment itself isn’t particularly painful—thanks to the numbing cream that helps dull the sensations—you’ll need to hang in there a bit afterward. Especially if it’s your first time, like it was for me! Rest assured, after a few hours, the skin—which still shows some redness—regains its normal sensation. The next day, the redness, warmth, and tingling had disappeared, and my skin—which still felt a bit rough to the touch—had a lovely sun-kissed glow. After 48 hours of using rich, soothing creams, SPF 50, and my vial of vitamin A serum, my skin regained its radiance. In the days that follow, my skin looks more radiant, smoother, and softer in texture, and my few dark spots are slightly faded. A lovely boost of radiance worth maintaining… Because it takes 5 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, to really see an improvement in skin tone evenness and a reduction in dark spots.” — Elsa, Editorial Manager
