In the bathroom of Chrysoline de Gastines, founder of Balzac

At the helm of Balzac Paris, a brand pioneering more responsible and desirable fashion, Chrysoline de Gastines embodies a contemporary elegance blending refinement with a commitment to tomorrow's fashion. In her world, every detail counts and every choice is rich in meaning, right down to her bathroom, where she cultivates a delicate approach to beauty where taking care of yourself becomes a true ritual of well-being.

Tell us all about yourself

"I'm Chrysoline de Gastines, and my first name says a lot about my northern origins. This is certainly the first and last time you will read it. I founded Balzac Paris in 2014 with my brother-in-law Charles Fourmaux and my husband Victorien. Entrepreneurship in fashion and being creative director of Balzac Paris excites me! I also thrive in my role as mom to 4 children, two girls and two boys including an 8-month-old baby. My husband and I recently moved back to Lille, our home town. This gave us the opportunity to strike a balance between working in Paris and living in the countryside with our tribe! Since the beginning of spring, it's been delightful to have a garden and to be able to extend the season with outdoor dinners!"

How did the Balzac Paris adventure begin?

"In 2011, Balzac Paris was all about bespoke bow ties made in France. We were pursuing this entrepreneurial adventure in parallel with our jobs at the time! Charles and Victorien and I quickly became passionate about this adventure, which put the customer at the heart of our creative process! It also made us realize that customers wanted to buy differently, they wanted to be part of a community, adhere to strong values and a singular aesthetic. In 2014, Charles and I left our jobs to embark on the Balzac Paris adventure full-time! We're self-taught, with strong convictions and few preconceived ideas. That's our strength, as we write the outline of this new chapter: Balzac Paris will be a desirable, responsible brand offering women's clothing exclusively on the web. Our authenticity, our values and our collections are attracting many customers who love our "tradibarge" DNA. The adventure is underway, and we're opening our first boutique in 2021 to continue this digital adventure in retail with locations that reflect us and the brand's aesthetic universe, awakening all our customers' senses!"

Why this commitment to tomorrow's fashion?

"More than a commitment, these are the strong convictions of our managers. A deep desire to shake things up. In 2014, we said that "we wanted to make tomorrow's fashion today". In 2025, this more virtuous fashion that contributes to changing mentalities and consumption patterns is no longer an option. Many brands have made a 360° turn, but for us, responsible fashion is intrinsic to who we are. We are a certified B Corp and a mission-driven company whose raison d'être is "to write together a world where the desirable is sustainable and the sustainable desirable.

How would you describe the Balzac Paris brand today?

"As mentioned earlier, Balzac Paris has a "tradibarge" DNA, which means that we imagine creations designed to last, with quality fabrics and well-considered cuts that stand the test of seasons and years, but that all our garments and accessories have an extra soul. That little "je ne sais quoi" à la Balzac that makes the brand unique and authentic. That's how leopard patterns and stripes have become so representative of who we are, just like the Victorian collars and fringed jackets we recognize among 1,000 on the street!"

Balzac Paris and Talm are collaborating on a new limited edition dedicated to women and mothers. Can you tell us more about this collaboration?

"I fell in love with Kenza's products, which I discovered a few months ago when I was pregnant with Georges. I think the proposition is very fair and the products true to their commitments. Aside from Talm's visual appeal, to which I'm 100% committed, I really like Kenza's entrepreneurial philosophy. Her products are multi-functional: perfect as gifts, because they delight expectant mothers! Perfect as a gift for an efficient, clean routine! But also for after pregnancy and for our children. I'm particularly addicted to the Mist and the moisturizing oil!"

Has becoming a mother changed the way you look after yourself?

"I was particularly attentive to endocrine disruptors because I was made aware of the subject when I was trying to have my third. I also discovered fertility yoga with Charlotte Muller which I loved, and her belly breathing, which continues to accompany me! My moments alone are often dedicated to relaxation: massage, facial... just to let go! So I think so, but it's also a question of age and changing needs."

Tell us about your vision of beauty...

"It's a difficult question in this age of RS that we're all confronted with. Filters that smooth out facial features and certain diktats that remain firmly entrenched. But there's no substitute for a beautiful smile and an open, caring face. I like natural, unadorned beauty... someone who feels good about herself, her body and therefore her shoes! I'm sensitive to beauty, but it's all very subjective. "We're all someone's beauty" and it works the other way round too ;)."

Is your bathroom a sanctuary of well-being or a place where people pass through quickly?

"My bathroom is open to my bedroom. So I spend time in it early in the morning when efficiency is at a premium with the 4 minis waiting on me like crazy, or late at night when the kids have gone to bed. The window of opportunity is slim, but that doesn't stop me from having a routine all my own and enjoying spending time there."

What are the essentials that never leave your bathroom?

"For the day cream I'm not yet faithful, for the moment I'm testing several! At the moment, for example, I'm testing the Dive in Serum Hydrating Serum with Hyaluronic Acid I really like it! I love the Nourishing Oil Cleanser and Regenerating Cleanser combo from Tata Harper to which I remain faithful. For the body, since my last pregnancy, I've been moisturizing with Mega Oil from Talm, which is great! For make-up, I trust Justine, who works at Oh My Cream in Lille, with her eyes closed. She gave me some great advice on a simple, effective routine from Ilia and Violette_FR to which I add my must-haves from Balzac Paris!"

Have you always taken care of yourself?

"I've always loved discovering beauty products, trying out new things! I spent 6 months in the beauty department of Version Femina before moving on to Marie Claire. Beauty departments in the press are a veritable Ali Baba's cave! I think I was hooked then. I've also always seen my mom use specific products, cream herself and take care of herself. So yes, I do take care of myself. Right now it's the LED Mask My Blend LED Mask has joined my beauty routine, and the results are in! Combined with Kobido to keep your glow."

Why this return to Lille?

"We've lived in Paris for over 18 years. It's an exceptional city, there aren't 2 like it. It's exhilarating to wander the streets of Paris and see the bustle and life there! I loved raising my three children as little Parisians, roaming the sidewalks, the parks of the 9th and 10th arrondissements, the exhibitions and the cafés... We'd always known we were going back to Lille, the question was when? Then Georges came along, and with 4 children, the desire for more green, a gentler life with more peace and quiet was felt. It was only natural to go back to our roots, as the people of Lille who read this will understand! And for any Parisians wondering, the weather in Lille is the same as in Paris, just 2 degrees cooler ;). And since Balzac's offices are in Paris, I'm back there three days a week, which gives me a taste of Parisian excitement and means I haven't cut the Cord completely!"

Is your well-being a pillar of your personal balance?

"He's the backbone of us all! I had Georges when I was 39, so I saw a real difference in putting up with the choppy nights and busy days with the 4s and the work I quickly resumed. If I had to do it all over again, I'd try to press pause for longer to allow my body and mind to get back into balance! Sleep is key for me; I'm one of those people who needs to sleep. I'd love to tell you that a few hours is enough, but I'd be lying! I also need to stretch every day for my back, which has long been an issue. I think we all have different needs, and it's important to listen and put in place the things that make us feel good! It's time to take care of yourself, time you don't give to others. But it's absolutely key in one's relationship with oneself but especially with others: one's husband, family and friends."

What are the rituals that help you recharge your batteries and contribute to this balance?

Here are my favorite places in Lille and Paris to get a massage or facial:

  • Chez Alix de Paume

  • Chez Marie Peloille

  • Teresa who comes to your home.

  • Charlotte Muller and her studio!

  • Spa Alaena for body massages

And in Lille :

  • At Oh My Cream of course

  • Liberté Justine!

  • At my friend Alison's, who hasn't opened her practice yet, but will soon.

  • At Seasonly!

And on the net, Clarisse Ernoux, whose simple, effective routine I love.

What's next for Balzac Paris?

"There are many, because we love agility and opportunity! That's the strength of a model like ours. So we're opening very soon in Biarritz for a few months, and arriving in two major French cities this summer. The opening of these new locations is very exciting, as we get to meet our community, who are eagerly awaiting our arrival. The welcome is always extremely warm and we redouble our attention to all those first-time customers who put their trust in us. Balzac Paris is a story of F(amis) in the broadest sense of the word, and we've got a lot more to talk about with some very exciting collaborations in the autumn."
