Getting ready for summer with self-tanner: our tips for applying it properly

When the sunny days start to shine, we already dream of a tanned complexion. And to get a luminous tan like you're back from vacation, even before the summer begins, use self-tanner! To choose, apply and even remove it, we give you all our tips and tricks!

What is a self-tanner?

After the long winter months, our skin sometimes tends to show a dull complexion and a tired look. So to counter the effects of the lack of sunshine and display a luminous complexion, we rely on Vitamin Cthe star active ingredient that promises a radiant complexion as summer approaches. But if you want to show off a real tanned complexion, theself-tanner remains our best ally.

Self-tanner, the ally of a tanned complexion before summer

This treatment, which allows you to obtain a light tan without exposing yourself to the sun's UV rays, is generally composed of a tanning agent called dihydroxyacetone (DHA). Of natural or synthetic origin, it reacts with the dead cells of the upper layer of the skin, producing a browning effect. With the frequent renewal of the horny layer, the browning effect gradually fades and theself-tanner applied to the skin will disappear after 5 to 7 days.

At Oh My Cream, as well as in the Rudolph Care self-tanners or Tan Adaptive Mist Oskiayou will find a natural or plant-based DHA. Self-tanning products may also contain other antioxidant ingredients such as vitamin E or, in the case of Rudolph Care, acai. These antioxidants protect the skin from the free radicals responsible for skin aging and cellular alteration, and thus allow for a more even and natural tan. (However, don't forget your favorite SPF!)

Are there any risks associated with a self-tanner?

The DHA present in self-tanning products does not present no health risk at a maximum concentration of at a maximum concentration of 10% (but rest assured, this percentage is the maximum authorized in cosmetics in Europe). Self-tanners are not contraindicated in the event of pregnancy, and no scientific study has proven that DHA can penetrate the skin's protective barriers.

It is important to note, however, that self-tanning products can cause irritation if applied to sensitive areas of the body. DHA can also dry out the skin and increase its sensitivity to the sun. For this reason, we recommend that you moisturize your skin daily and avoid applying the product to areas covered by mucous membranes. Note also that self-tanners do not protect against UV rays. So remember to apply sun protection when exposed to the sun.

Which self-tanner to choose?

There are many forms of self-tanner: in drops to be mixed with your moisturizer, in lotion, in oil, serum or milk... The best self-tanner will be the one that meets the needs of your skin and your desires. Note that a self-tanner in milk, oil or cream format will tend to be more moisturizing for the skin, while a mousse or mist texture will be easier to apply but will penetrate the skin more quickly. And to stimulate your tan naturally, you can also opt for self-tanning capsules. The capsules We want... a sublime tan Atelier Nubio stimulate, sublimate and prolong your tan for a luminous and long-lasting tanned complexion. The ideal ally to prepare your skin for the sun for a luminous tan! (Here again, we do not forget that these small capsules do not protect us from the sun...)

How to correctly apply a self-tanner?

  • The application of your self-tanner must always be done on a clean and dry skin. So, if you just got out of the shower, wait 20 minutes before applying your tanning treatment.
  • We recommendexfoliating the skin 48 to 72 hours before applying a self-tanner to even out the epidermis. To do this, use a body scrub to remove dead cells from the skin's surface, such as Seal Salt Gommage au Sel Marin Marjolaine Eucalyptus 135 L:a Bruket, a scrub that deeply exfoliates and nourishes the skin, leaving a satin finish, or the Coco Rose Exfoliating Body Scrub Herbivore, a gentle scrub that leaves skin soft and nourished. You can also exfoliate your skin in the days following the application of a self-tanner to ensure your tan lasts.
  • It is also advisable to favour hair removal before the application of a self-tannerrather than after. Indeed, waxing after the use of a self-tanning product can slightly lighten the skin.
  • To avoid self-tanning stains on your hands or marks on your skin, it's all about the massage! Massage your skin with broad, enveloping strokes to ensure that your self-tanner is properly absorbed. And for the face, proceed as you would with your moisturizer: from the inside to the outside, with circular massages, without forgetting to massage the nape of the neck and the ears, for a uniform and harmonious result . Our tip: after applying your self-tanner, use a wet, well-wrung cotton pad on rough areas (like heels, knees or elbows) and eyebrows. This will easily avoid darker areas.
  • And finally, don't forget to wash your hands after finishing your application!
  • Finally, as mentioned above, the application of a self-tanner can sometimes dry out the epidermis, so it is recommended to moisturize your skin the days following your self-tanning treatment. Indeed, by moisturizing daily, your skin remains smooth, supple and even, and your tan lasts longer!

How do I remove self-tanner?

#seo: how to apply self-tanner

How do I remove self-tanner from my hands?

Slightly tinted palms and can testify to the application of self-tanner? Unfortunately, this is one of the failures that can be encountered when applying a tanning treatment. But don't panic, you won't have to keep your orange hands for long! Get yourself a little lemon juice mixed with a few teaspoons of salt. Rub your hands together for a few minutes before rinsing, then moisturize your hands intensely, and you're done!

How to remove self-tanning stains from the skin?

One of the hazards of self-tanning is of course the traces it can leave on the skin. To counter these small failures that we notice once the self-tanner is applied, nothing is more effective thanan exfoliation for the body. To reduce self-tanning stains and homogenize the result, massage a body scrub on dry skin for a few minutes, then rinse off the grains.

How to remove excess self-tanner?

It happens sometimes that we see things in (too) big, by applying a little too much self-tanner... Result? A shade that turns brown or orange. No need to panic! To reduce the effect of a self-tanner, apply a generous amount of coconut oil on your skin and leave on for 30 minutes before rinsing. The combination of oil and warm water can reduce the excess tanning product.
