Getting ready for summer with self-tanner: our tips for applying it properly

When the sunny days arrive, we're already dreaming of a tanned complexion. And if you want a luminous tan that looks like you're back from vacation, even before the summer season begins, you've got to use self-tanner! Here are our tips and tricks for choosing, applying and even removing self-tanner!

What is a self-tanner?

After the long winter months, our skin sometimes tends to look a dull complexion and a tired complexion. So, to counter the effects of lack of sunshine and achieve a luminous complexion, we opt for Vitamin Cthe star active ingredient that promises a radiant complexion as summer approaches. But if you want a truly tanned complexion, theself-tanner remains our best ally.

Self-tanner for a tanned complexion in the run-up to summer

This treatment, which allows you to obtain a light tan without exposing yourself to the sun's UV rays, is generally composed of a tanning agent called dihydroxyacetone (DHA). Of natural or synthetic origin, it reacts on contact with dead cells in the upper layer of the skin, producing a browning effect. With the frequent renewal of the stratum corneum, the browning effect gradually fades and theself-tanner applied to the skin will disappear after 5 to 7 days.

At Oh My Cream, both Rudolph Care or Tan Adaptive Mist Oskiayou'll find natural or plant-derived DHA. Self-tanners may also contain other antioxidant ingredients such as vitamin E or, in the case of Rudolph Care, acai. These antioxidants protect the skin from the free radicals responsible for skin ageing and cell damage, enabling a more even, natural-looking tan. (But don't forget your favorite SPF!)

Are there any risks associated with self-tanning products?

The DHA present in self-tanning products does not present does not present any health risks at a maximum concentration of 10% (but rest assured, this percentage is the maximum permitted in cosmetics in Europe). Moreover, self-tanners are not contraindicated in cases of pregnancy, and no scientific study has proven that DHA can penetrate the skin's protective barriers.

It is important to note, however, that self-tanning products can cause irritation if applied to sensitive areas of the body. DHA can also dry out the skin and increase its sensitivity to the sun. For this reason, we recommend that you moisturize your skin daily and avoid applying the product to areas covered by mucous membranes. Note also that self-tanners do not protect against UV rays. So remember to apply sun protection when exposed to the sun.

Which self-tanner is right for you?

There are many forms of self-tanner: drops to mix with moisturizer, mousse, lotion, oil, serum or milk. mousse, lotion, oil, serum or milk... The best self-tanner will be the one that meets your skin's needs and your desires. Note that a self-tanner in milk, oil or cream format will tend to be more moisturizing for the skin, while a mousse or mist texture will be easier to apply but will penetrate the skin more quickly. How do I apply self-tanner correctly?

  • Self-tanners should always be applied to clean, dry skin. So, if you've just got out of the shower, wait 20 minutes before applying your self-tanner.
  • We recommendexfoliating the skin 48 to 72 hours before applying a self-tanner to even out the epidermis. To do this, use a body scrub to remove dead cells from the skin's surface, such as Seal Salt Gommage au Sel Marin Marjolaine Eucalyptus 135 L:a Bruket, a scrub that deeply exfoliates and nourishes the skin, leaving a satin finish, or the Coco Rose Exfoliating Body Scrub Herbivore, a gentle scrub that leaves skin soft and nourished. You can also exfoliate your skin in the days following the application of a self-tanner to ensure your tan lasts.
  • We also recommend hair removal before applying self-tannerrather than afterwards. Indeed, waxing after self-tanning can lighten the skin slightly.
  • To avoid self-tanner stains on your hands or marks on your skin, it's all about massage! Massage your skin with broad, enveloping strokes to help your self-tanner penetrate. And for the face, proceed in the same way as with your moisturizer: from the inside out, using circular massages, not forgetting to massage the nape of the neck and the ears, for an even, harmonious finish. Our tip: after applying your self-tanner, wipe over rough areas (such as heels, knees or elbows) and eyebrows with a damp, well-wrung cotton pad. This makes it easy to avoid darker areas.
  • And don't forget to wash your hands after applying the product!
  • Finally, as mentioned above, the application of self-tanner can sometimes dry out the epidermis, so we recommend that you moisturize your skin in the days following your self-tanning treatment. Daily moisturizing will keep your skin smooth, supple and even, and your tan will last longer!

How do I remove self-tanner?

#seo: how to apply self-tanner

How do I remove self-tanner from my hands?

Slightly tinted palms and can testify to the application of self-tanner? Unfortunately, this is one of the failures you can encounter when applying a bronzer. But don't worry, you won't have to keep your orange hands for long! Just a little lemon juice, mixed with a few teaspoons of salt. Rub your hands for a few minutes before rinsing, then moisturize intensely - and you're done!

How do you remove self-tanning stains from the skin?

One of the hazards of self-tanning is the marks it can leave on the skin. To counter these little mishaps, which are noticeable once the self-tanner has been applied, nothing is more effective thanbody exfoliation. To reduce self-tanning stains and even out the result, massage a body scrub into dry skin for a few minutes, then rinse off the grains.

How do I remove excess self-tanner?

Sometimes we overdo things by applying a little too much self-tanner... The result? A shade that turns brown or orange. Don't panic! To reduce the effect of self-tanner, apply a generous amount of coconut oil and leave on for 30 minutes before rinsing. The combination of oil and warm water can help reduce any excess tanning cream.
