But an anti-aging routine will never be at its most effective without sun protection. 80% of premature signs of skin ageing are caused by UV rays. And UV rays don't stop at the end of summer; they're constant all year round, penetrating the atmosphere even on cloudy days (and even through windows). In short, the sun's rays damage our skin every day of the year!
Understanding the impact of UV
There are several types of UV: UVA, UVB and UVC. UVA rays penetrate the deepest part of the skin, down to the dermis. They are responsible for changes in skin pigmentation ( tanning), but they are also largely responsible for skin aging. As they penetrate the skin, they generate free radicals, unstable molecules that damage skin cells, including the key proteins involved in skin firmness and elasticity: collagen and elastin. This phenomenon, known as oxidative stress, leads to the appearance of wrinkles pigmentation spots skin becomes thinner, rougher and less firm, and the complexion less even.
UVB rays are responsible for sunburn. They stop at the epidermis, but damage the cells' DNA. Although stronger in summer, they can damage and burn the skin all year round, particularly at high altitudes and on reflective surfaces such as snow or ice.
Finally, UVCs are the most dangerous, but they are absorbed by the ozone layer and by oxygen in the atmosphere, before reaching the earth's surface.
There are 4 SPF levels:
-
6 to 10: representing low protection
-
15 to 25: representing medium protection
-
30 to 50: representing strong protection
-
50 and +: representing very high protection
Each sun protection factor corresponds to a percentage of UVB rays blocked. For example, SPF 20 blocks around 92% of UVB rays, while SPF 30 blocks around 95%. Finally, SPF 50 will block 98% of UVB rays. Even if the difference in the percentage of UV rays blocked isn't huge, protection will still be more effective and a high level of protection will be more appropriate, especially if you have fair skin. Do you have dark skin? Depending on your destination, you may opt for a medium to high protection factor. In all cases, however, suncare products can only deliver effective protection if certain golden rules of application are observed.
How to use sun protection properly
The various tests used to assign a protection score to your suncare product are carried out under certain conditions. Unfortunately, these are far removed from common usage. For example, when measuring SPF on the face, about half a teaspoon of sun protection is applied.
